Running On Sand vs. Concrete

I'm blessed enough that I live right next to the beach. So when I go running I do my first 1 or 2 on the concrete and then for a change of scenery I do the second half on the beach it's self. So I was interested in finding out what the difference to the body is.

Running on Sand is more intensive, and easier on the knees.

Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery house is an interesting story. Sarah Winchester was married to a man who owned a company who made weapons, or at least guns. When her husband died she went to a medium who told her to move out west and build a house, and never stop building onto it.

It was Sarahs belief that if she were to stop building the ghosts of the people killed by her husbands weapons would kill her. Which also explains why this seven story 75$ home had doors that lead to nowhere. Staircases that lead only to the ceiling(no trap doors or attics at the top). Also, windows that didn't leave the house, but simply show into another room.

The house is only 4 stories now. An earthquake pretty much ruined it. :/

Takakanonuma Greenland - Abandoned Amusement Park

Takakanonuma Greenland is an amusement park in Japan that was just.. straight up abandoned. The internet says that it's been abandoned because of too many "deaths" but I can't find anything more on that. :/ Most sites say that it closed down due to a lack of market. Either way, you would think it would make sense to sell the remaining pieces of the park. As seen below, it looks like there was no effort to sell any of it. Very interesting :)

"There are only a few remaining accounts of Takakanonuma Greenland, and hardly any current photographs. It was a massive amusement park built in the 1970s, but now is overgrown by the forest.
According to most sources, it is not featured on any maps of Japan and is as remote as it is unknown to cartographers. Although it's only 250 km North of Tokyo, it seems much more mysterious, and much of its spotty history is made up of legend and lore.
Built in 1973, the park's first run at the amusement market lasted only two years. Although some say it was closed for repairs, others insist that deaths on the park's equipment forced its closure. Perhaps the park was repaired, or maybe it was long enough for people to forget the amusement accidents, but the park reopened in 1986. Staying alive on its second tenure until 1999, the park closed for good and was abandoned.
Today, the sprawling hills and trees of the surrounding forests seem to have taken over the park, and its grounds are littered with the remnants of its 13-year run as a theme park. However, around 2010 most of the roller coasters were torn down, leaving just the trees to reclaim it all. "

YOUR TASTE BUDS GROW BACK!!!

Did you freakin' know that your taste buds regenerate themselves? I mean, it makes sense right, because that's what your skin does, but I just never thought about it. Holy cow that's so freakin' cool.

"Taste buds are constantly regenerating.
Taste buds go through a life cycle where they grow from basal cells into taste cells and then die and are sloughed away. According to Dr. Bartoshuk, their normal life cycle is anywhere from 10 days to two weeks. However, “burning your tongue on hot foods can also kill taste buds,” she says. “But they grow right back, which is why the ability to taste doesn’t diminish with age.” Though Dr. Bartoshuk notes that taste remains robust as we get older, the ability to taste bitterness does decline in women with the onset of menopause. Since, on a primal level, the ability to taste bitter may protect a pregnant woman’s baby, those receptors may stop working after a woman’s childbearing years are over because it is no longer a reproductive necessity."

Youngest Person To Have Lap Band Surgery, 2 years old.

The parents of the toddler from Saudi Arabia who weighed 33kg (72lbs) and had a Body Mass Index of 41 sought help because he suffered sleep apnoea that caused him to stop breathing while asleep.

I was wondering if he suffers from that disorder that makes the body never feel full. I found out that it was something very similar to that. The child is always hungry. He suffers from, "Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare disorder present at birth that results in a number of physical, mental and behavioral problems. A key feature of Prader-Willi (prah-dur VIL-ee) syndrome is a constant sense of hunger that usually begins after the first year of life."

The Truth About Betty Crocker

Betty Crocker is not, nor ever was, a real person. "The name was first developed by the Washburn Crosby Company in 1921 as a way to give a personalized response to consumer product questions. The name Betty was selected because it was viewed as a cheery, all-American name. It was paired with the last name Crocker, in honor of William Crocker, a Washburn Crosby Company director." - Wikipedia.

Dying When An Elevator Falls

Today I learned, from my father, that if a elevator for some reason loses it's lock and begins to drop.. it's not going to. According to dad, who worked at a hospital with the guys who worked on the elevators, the damn thing is going no where but up! Up and through the roof.

I couldn't find anything explaining how that would all go down, but I did find that there are mechanisms in place that would try to absorb the momentum if it some how did drop.

I also found that if it did fall, jumping at the last second ain't gunna save yo ass. See the Myth Busters clip below!

The Truth About Cookies

Today I learned the truth about cookies. You CAN NOT buy a box of cookies without opening them. So next time your out shopping and you think, "I can resist, I don't have to eat them" you should try instead, "I don't need to buy these cookies. If I do, I'll freakin' eat them".

Mary Lee

Today I learned about Mary Lee. Mary Lee is a great white shark that has been spotted in North Topsail. She was caught and tagged from what I understand, and they're keeping track of her where abouts. There are also two other ladies that have joined her Genie and also Lydia. Mary Lee also has a Twitter account that you can follow her on!

(No pictures of her posted, because sharks freak me the hell out and I can't look at them :x)

Today I learned...

I learned a lot of cool things last night at work and forgot the post them!

There is such a thing as a Black Dolphin. Who the hell knew!?

The Chilean dolphin (Cephalorhynchus eutropia), also known as the black dolphin, is one of four dolphins in the Cephalorhynchus genus. The dolphin is only found off the coast of Chile. (But there are people that say you can see them all the time in North Topsail, NC)
