Dying When An Elevator Falls

Today I learned, from my father, that if a elevator for some reason loses it's lock and begins to drop.. it's not going to. According to dad, who worked at a hospital with the guys who worked on the elevators, the damn thing is going no where but up! Up and through the roof.

I couldn't find anything explaining how that would all go down, but I did find that there are mechanisms in place that would try to absorb the momentum if it some how did drop.
